Crush It!: Why NOW Is the Time to Cash In on Your Passion

Gary Vaynerchuk · 2009

Who it's for

For anyone who spends the day in a job that has nothing to do with what they really love doing, and who dreams of turning a hobby, a talent or a weekend passion into a source of income. It's also for people who already post content online with no strategy at all and want to understand why some accounts grow while others stay stuck.

3 ideas to take with you

1

Talent isn't enough: if you don't show up consistently online, you become invisible to the very people who need exactly what you know how to do.

2

Answering comments, messages and criticism one by one is what separates people who build an audience from people who just post content into the void.

3

A strong personal brand takes years to pay off, and people who expect fast results almost always quit before the curve turns.

“
The price of turning a passion into a business is a pile of extra hours nobody posts on social media.

From the liquor store to a daily video show

Before becoming an author, Gary Vaynerchuk took over his family's liquor store in New Jersey while still young, a small neighborhood business. Instead of just selling over the counter, he started recording daily videos about wine, with no script, no studio, just a simple camera and a lot of willingness to be seen.

The show became a habit, the habit became a routine, and that daily routine, kept up for years, was the real engine behind the growth of the family business. There was no lucky break and no one-day viral hit: there was repetition.

It's from this hands-on experience, not from classroom theory, that Crush It! was born. The author isn't teaching something he read in another book. He's telling you what he did himself, chapter after chapter, with examples of other people who followed a similar path.

The central thesis of the book

The idea holding up the whole book is simple to state and hard to carry out: everyone carries some passion, hobby or knowledge that can become interesting content for other people, and the internet has made it possible to turn that content into a personal brand and, over time, into income.

It doesn't matter whether the passion is home cooking, vintage cars, pickup soccer or personal finance: there's an audience for practically any niche, as long as someone shows up regularly and with real knowledge of the subject.

The book doesn't promise fame or fortune overnight. The proposal is different: use the free tools the internet offers to slowly build a reputation around something you already like doing.

Before the product, build your personal brand

For Vaynerchuk, the first step isn't selling anything. It's discovering and owning your personal brand: your way of speaking, the topics you truly master, a tone that sounds authentic and not copied from another reference.

In the book, a personal brand means being recognizable. If someone sees a video, a post or a piece of writing without knowing who made it and can guess the author from the style, that brand already exists. If you always need the signature to know who spoke, you still have work to do.

This work of self-knowledge comes before any sales strategy. People who jump straight to figuring out how to make money, without first defining who they are and what they stand for, build a weak brand that's easy to confuse with any other.
