The executive who treated his body like a crashed system

Dave Asprey was the picture of a Silicon Valley tech executive: a fast-moving career, stock options on the table, and weighing close to 300 pounds. He says he lived with constant brain fog, sleep that never left him rested, and a hunger that ran his routine more than he did. He tried the recommended diets of the time, lost weight, gained it all back with interest, and ended up tired of trying.

The answer he found was importing an engineering mindset into his own body: biohacking, the practice of viewing human biology as a system that can be measured, tweaked, and optimized. Asprey claims to have spent over $300,000 on lab work and tests to understand why his body stored fat even when he ate little and ran regularly.

Out of that search came the Bulletproof Diet, which turned into a brand and a multimillion-dollar business, a detail the reader should keep in mind when weighing its promises.

The logic of the diet: more fat, fewer toxins

The core proposal comes down to flipping the food pyramid upside down: plenty of high-quality fat, moderate protein, low carbs, and the elimination of foods the author considers inflammatory. By his math, more than half of your daily calories should come from fatty sources like butter, egg yolks, avocado, coconut oil, and olive oil.

The rationale is satiety: good fat digests slowly, doesn't spike blood sugar, and keeps energy steady for hours, whereas sugar and white flour create a vicious cycle of rapid hunger and chronic inflammation. To Asprey, not all calories are created equal: five hundred calories of broccoli with butter operate in the body in a completely different way than five hundred calories of sandwich cookies.

An important heads-up right from the start: cutting back on sugar and ultra-processed food is a consensus in modern medicine and nutrition; massive fat intake and the promise of losing weight without a calorie deficit, however, are the author's personal bet, without unanimous scientific backing.

Bulletproof coffee: the drink that became a product

The calling card of the method is Bulletproof coffee, a blended mix of brewed coffee, grass-fed unsalted butter, and MCT oil, a coconut derivative rich in medium-chain triglycerides. The blend turns out creamy, looking like a latte, and replaces the first meal of the day.

The promise behind the mug is extending your overnight fast without feeling weak: fat doesn't trigger insulin, tricks the stomach, and supplies fuel for the brain to run all morning with sharp focus. For those intolerant to dairy, the author suggests swapping butter for ghee, clarified butter free of lactose and casein.

Here comes the point that calls for skepticism: Asprey founded his own company to sell the certified beans, the special oil, and the recipe's accessories. The book recommends the author's own brands, which requires separating nutritional advice from a sales catalog.
