Who the restless minds are

Ana Beatriz Barbosa Silva's book is a popular introduction to what medicine calls attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, which the book writes as ADD/H. The author coined the expression restless minds to talk about distracted, impulsive, agitated people who keep being called lazy, disorganized, or rude.

The premise is straightforward: a good part of these behaviors is not a flaw of character or upbringing, but a different way for the brain to regulate attention and energy. Recognizing this is the first step toward reducing guilt and seeking help.

The text uses everyday cases, with characters who resemble the coworker who shows up late every week, the student who is always getting scolded, and the adult who changes jobs without understanding why. It's a read made for laypeople, not a treatise.

What ADHD is, in simple words

According to the book and medical consensus, ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that appears in childhood and is characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, more intense than expected for the person's age and capable of causing real harm in daily life.

The key word is pattern. Everybody gets distracted, everybody has forgotten their keys. What stands out is the frequency, the intensity, and the damage: missed school days, firings, fights, debts, accidents. And the picture has to show up in more than one setting, such as at home and at work.

The author describes three forms: predominantly inattentive, hyperactive and impulsive, and combined, which brings the two together. Each has its own signs, and that's why many people go through life unnoticed, especially those who are quiet and dreamy.

Inattention that looks like indifference

Inattention tends to be the most misunderstood side. The person misses details, starts tasks and doesn't finish them, forgets commitments, loses things, drifts off in conversation, and seems not to listen even when looking right at you. Outsiders assume it's disinterest or disrespect.

In practice, attention doesn't work like an on-off switch. It does fine on highly stimulating tasks, like a game or an exciting conversation, and fails on repetitive activities, like filling out a form, paying a bill, or studying a long text. What looks like lazy pickiness is a difficulty with regulation.

Think of someone who misses the bus because they forgot their phone, goes back to get it, and misses the next one too. The episodes repeat and bring shame. The book points out that, without understanding the cause, the person tends to see themselves as incapable.
